Fostering STEM Interest With Robots

Everything is more interesting with robots, don’t you think?

The U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command’s Edgewood Chemical Biological Center hosted a Mathematics with Robotics seminar! The seminar presented by the National Center for the Advancement of STEM Education taught Cecil Country Maryland teachers how they can use robotics to make teaching math fun.

The BRAIN Initiative

President Barack Obama has announced a new research initiative to prevent, treat and cure brain injuries. The “BRAIN Initiative” gives scientists the tools they need to get a better picture of how the brain functions.

In his upcoming budget, the President plans to propose $100 million in 2014 –or what he calls a “significant investment” in the project– by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation to start the BRAIN Initiative.

The goal is to better understand how brain cells interact to help crack the code of brain injury and disease.

Specifically, DARPA plans to explore new tools to measure and analyze electrical signals to the brain, as well as, researching the vast spectrum of the brain’s functionality.

Making batteries from lemons. Learning the chemistry of fireworks. Boiling slime and bubbling ooze. This is the kind of stuff that sparks an interest into the wild world of science. The building blocks of scientists, one might say.

Scientists and engineers of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command and other tenant organizations from Aberdeen Proving Ground partnered with industry and academia to host hands-on demonstrations and presentations to local students for STEM and Beyond Night.

Wii Fit Therapy

Any time I get the chance to talk about video games helping in the military community I like to take it. Virtual simulators and first person shooters aside, not all video games are about preparing for the conflict ahead. Sometimes, they’re for recovering from the scars of the conflict from the past.

The VA now uses video game technology like the Wii Fit Therapy to help veterans regain balance and movement they have lost.
