Podcast #37: Creating Energy Abundance, Efficiency and Diversity

This week on Armed with Science, Dr. Barbara McQuiston of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), spoke about a few interesting ways the Department of Defense is trying to revolutionize renewable energy sources.

“I think Peter Drexler always said it well … ‘If you want to control the future, you need to create it,’” McQuiston said. “So DARPA invests science and technology to make these changes. When we looked at energy, what we were looking at was the diversification of energy sources and moving away from a reliance on fossil fuel to create better energy security for ourselves now and in the future.”

Their plan? To create renewable biofuel using things like cellulose (”woody” materials), rich oil and algae. You read right: algae, the plant-like organisms that float around in the ocean, could one day fuel C-130s and F-16s. But the focus isn’t as much on what the fuel is made of, but where it can be made.

For example, all fuel used in Afghanistan needs to be shipped there. If bio jet fuel could be made from plant materials that could be farmed there, it would be a “game-changer” for the military operation there and the country’s economy.

“If you looked … at Afghanistan, if you could be able to create jet fuel from indigenous sources, and rely on that, you’d not only be able to be able to source energy for our military, but you’d be able to leave an infrastructure that would be more sustainable for the country,” McQuiston said.

Podcast #32: USAF Doctor Advances Research and Treatment for Cyanide Poisoning

Dr. (Maj.) Vik Bebarta, an Air Force doctor and toxicology specialist at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, TX is researching better tools to diagnose and treat acute cyanide toxicity in critically ill patients, like those stricken during terrorist attacks. One of Bebarta’s projects, which compared cyanide antidote treatments, won this year’s Best Basic Science Research Award from the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine.

“Armed with Science: Research and Applications for the Modern Military” is a weekly webcast that discusses the importance of science and technology to military operations and the Department of Defense. Podcast #28: Designing Intelligent Braces and Exoskeletons to Facilitate Walking After Paralysis

Immobility remains a major problem for disabled veterans. Immobility and wheelchair dependence cause degenerative changes in the bones, joints, hearts, lungs, and skin.

Dr. Ronald Triolo, Department of Veterans Affairs Senior Research Career Scientist, Case Western Reserve University Professor, Executive Director of the Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center of Excellence, and Associate Director of the Cleveland Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Center seeks to improve the quality of life for individuals with paraplegia following spinal cord injury through an innovative bracing system that will provide enhanced mobility. The ultimate goal is an articulated thoracic-hip-knee-ankle-foot orthosis that allows users to stand, walk, and climb stairs safely and efficiently with a minimum of effort.

Podcast #25: Preparing for a Bio-Attack on the Pentagon

The Pentagon Force Protection Agency is testing their response procedures and decontamination methods in the event of a bio-attack on the Pentagon. Mr. Paul Benda and Dr. Christina Murata, Director and Deputy Director of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives Directorate at the Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA), will discuss a recent test that took place at the Pentagon, how they simulated a bio-attack using a commercial garden powder, and what they hope to learn from their findings. Over 200 individuals participated in the test, including over 100 volunteers who were exposed to the garden powder and washed down. Tests were also conducted in 2005 and 2007, and PFPA has drawn from lessons learned and developed an extremely effective testing program. The results from their tests will be able to help local and Federal first responders across the Nation prepare for and respond to a bio-attack.

Podcast #21: Substance Use and Abuse among Military Personnel

Substance use and abuse, including non-medical use of prescription drugs, is an issue of concern in the US Military. Michael E. Kilpatrick, MD, Director of Strategic Communications for the Military Health System in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, discuss programs to prevent substance abuse, to provide counselling and rehabilitation for those with problems and ongoing studies to better understand the extent and contributing factors for these issues. Timothy P. Condon, PhD, Deputy Director, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), discusses a research initiative that NIDA has been leading on substance use and abuse among U.S. military personnel, veterans and their families. Issues regarding conducting research in military settings are also discussed.

Podcast #19: Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Dr. Barbara Rothbaum, director of the Trauma and Anxiety Recovery Program at the Emory University School of Medicine, discusses research investigating Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Iraq service members. This therapy involves recounting the experience out loud while the therapist attempts to match the virtual reality environment to the description. Through repetition, the memory becomes less painful and causes less disruption in daily activities and sleep. Lt. Col. Timothy Lacy, chief of Telehealth and Enterprise Imaging for the U.S. Air Force Medical Service, discusses how this therapy is being utilized by Air Force mental health professionals.
